Now She is Reading with Confidence

This story is about a current 4th grader at PTM. For the sake of privacy, we will not disclose her name. In this story we will refer to her as Carmen.

There was a time when Carmen would do almost anything to avoid reading out loud. When it was her turn to read in class, fear came first, and then anger, because anger felt safer than letting anyone see her struggle. Through first grade, the words on the page felt like a wall she couldn't climb, and every day she was reminded that she was behind. 


But her story didn't end there. 


At PTM, Carmen found a place where she could try, stumble, and try again without shame. Day by day, word by word, reading stopped being something she feared and became something she loved. Today it's one of her favorite parts of PTM, because she gets to take what she's learned back into her classroom. 


Carmen now reads on grade level. And the girl who once hid from the page now reads with a confidence that lifts everyone around her. 


Carmen's story is part of a bigger one- her mom has been with us for more than ten years. "One of PTM's originals," she calls herself. Six of her children have walked through our doors. Two have graduated. Two are about to. Her two youngest, including Carmen, are with us now. Through every season this mother of six has faced, we haven't just been a program her kids attend. We've been family. 


That's what we mean when we say God is writing a story on every student. It doesn't happen in a single moment. It unfolds over years, across siblings, through a mother who kept showing up and a community that kept showing up for her. What begins with one child learning to read becomes a family, and a generation, learning to believe for more.

Have you ever heard the phrase: “ delayed is not denied ?” It is often used in Christian spaces and, in essence, it is a saying used to help someone that is feeling impatient or forgotten to remember that things come in their proper time. It reminds them to not give up! Juneteenth is THE celebration that delay does not mean denial. Juneteenth commemorates the blood of slain black and brown bodies whose delay felt like a denial. It is the celebration of what is possible when we situate ourselves in honesty that none are free until all are free, that every does well when everyone does well. We acknowledge that while we have come far, today’s realities remind us that we still have a journey ahead of us. PTM takes a pause and invites you to do the same - to honor those whose bodies were sacrificed so that freedom would no longer be delayed, but would be realized and activated. Juneteenth is so much more than a reference to a federal document. Juneteenth is a spiritual proclamation that those who once were captive are now free. Join us in honoring those who have gone before us to show us the way, and to commemorate a celebration that didn’t just free slaves but also charted the course for generations that would come to dare to dream for the imaginable. It is important that we celebrate Juneteenth, so that our babies at PTM grow up being told and realizing that they are not denied. These narratives that we share with them as they are young and growing up are shaping their futures, and they deserve narratives that remind them that they are capable and worthy of their dreams!

Reflections from over a decade at PTM

This year, we are proud to celebrate seven seniors who are taking the next step—some heading to college, others to trade school, and some entering the workforce. What unites them all is the strong sense of community they’ve built here at PTM. A key part of that community is generosity, and we are deeply grateful to the Weaver Family and the Kuhn Family, who together provided over $40,000 in scholarships. Their support has helped not only these graduating seniors but also several current PTM college students.

It is our honor and privilege to establish the Ku-Kuhn PTM Alumni Scholarship in memory of our mothers, Evelyn Chen Ku and Rae Elisabeth Kuhn, to be awarded to PTM alumni in pursuit of further education. Our mothers were dedicated teachers and faithful Christian women with loving, caring and generous hearts. They were dearly loved by their families and colleagues and made a difference in the lives of so many children from the late 1940s through the 1980s.
